Getting Started
After signing in, you'll land on your Dashboard. Click the "New" button next to "Your Projects" to create a new project. Give it a name, and you're ready to start writing!
Your new project comes with a sample structure to get you started, but you can delete or modify everything to fit your story.
The Free tier lets you explore NovelSage with:
- 1 project
- 25,000 words
- 5 characters
- 5 sticky notes
- 1 research folder
Premium removes all limits, giving you unlimited projects, words, characters, notes, and research folders. You also get Dropbox backup and priority support.
Yes! NovelSage is fully responsive and works in any modern web browser. Just visit novel-sage.com on your device and sign in. Your projects sync automatically, so you can write on your laptop and continue on your phone.
Saving & Backup
NovelSage automatically saves your work to the cloud as you type. You'll see a "Saving..." indicator that changes to "Saved" when your latest changes are secure. No need to hit save manually!
We use a smart debounce system, so saves happen after brief pauses in your typing rather than on every keystroke.
From your Dashboard, find your project card and click "Backup", then choose "Download .novelsage file". This saves a complete copy of your project to your computer.
The .novelsage file contains everything: your manuscript, characters, research, notes, and settings. Keep these backups somewhere safe!
Premium users can connect Dropbox from the Dashboard. Look for the "Cloud Connections" section and click "Connect" next to Dropbox. You'll be taken to Dropbox to authorize the connection.
Once connected, you can backup projects to your Dropbox and restore from Dropbox backups. Files are stored in a NovelSage folder in your Dropbox.
From your Dashboard, click "Restore" on the project card, then choose your source: a local .novelsage file or Dropbox.
Important: Restoring will replace your current project data with the backup. Make sure you want to overwrite before confirming!
Writing & Organization
The Binder is your story's structure, shown in the left panel. It uses a three-level hierarchy:
- Acts - Major story divisions (Act 1, Act 2, Act 3)
- Chapters - Sections within acts
- Beats - Individual scenes within chapters
Right-click on any item to add, rename, or delete. Drag and drop to reorder your story structure.
Focus Mode is a true distraction-free writing environment. It hides the binder, toolbar, word count, and everything else, leaving just you and your words.
To enter Focus Mode, click the Focus button in the toolbar. A subtle hint bar appears at the top with basic formatting (bold, italic, underline) and fades away after a few seconds. Move your mouse to the top of the screen to bring it back.
Press ESC to exit Focus Mode and return to the full interface.
Click the Characters tab in the right panel to manage your cast. Each character profile can include:
- Photo (upload or paste URL)
- Physical description
- Personality traits
- Background/history
- Relationships to other characters
- Custom notes
Keep your character profiles open while writing to maintain consistency!
The Research tab lets you store reference material alongside your manuscript. Create folders to organize by topic (locations, history, worldbuilding, etc.).
Each research item can hold formatted text, links, and notes. It's perfect for keeping your source material close while you write.
Sticky notes are quick reminders that appear in the Notes tab. Use them for:
- To-do items ("Fix chapter 3 pacing")
- Plot reminders ("Foreshadow the betrayal")
- Continuity notes ("Sarah's eyes are green, not blue")
They're meant to be temporary and disposable. Delete them when done!
Exporting Your Work
NovelSage currently supports exporting to:
- TXT - Plain text, universal compatibility
- Markdown (.md) - For writers who use Markdown workflows
- Word (.docx) - Perfect for submissions to agents and publishers
- PDF - For sharing or printing
EPUB export for self-publishing is coming soon!
Click the Export button in the toolbar, choose your format, and your download will start automatically. The export includes your full manuscript text, organized by your binder structure.
Account & Billing
On the login page, click "Forgot Password?" and enter your email. We'll send you a reset link that's valid for 1 hour. Check your spam folder if you don't see it!
You can upgrade from your Dashboard or when you hit a free tier limit. We offer flexible pricing:
- Monthly - $3.99/month
- Quarterly - $9.99 every 3 months ($3.33/month)
- Annual - $29.99/year ($2.50/month, best value!)

Yes. Contact us at sage@novel-sage.com and we'll delete your account and all associated data. Make sure to export your projects first, as this action is permanent!
